Because I know you are all terribly interested, the meeting with the school board last night was overwhelming. I have been attending these kinds of meetings for three years and I have never seen anything even close to the turnout we had last night. There were 200 people who signed up to address the school board and close to 2000 who attended the meeting.
Fortunately I was the 5th person to speak to the school board which was very exciting, what a rush! Although the meeting lasted until after 1 am, we were able to say our piece and get home at a decent hour and put the kids to bed.
I am hopeful that the turnout will make a huge difference and save us all a lot of money. They didn't make a decision last night like they intended. They will hold another meeting again Aug 11th to make the decision.
It was apparent last night that the school board have not made the hard decisions and have not had the hard conversations before coming to the taxpayer to ask for more money.
It was clear that the tone at the top, meaning Superintendent Newbold, who is appointed by the school board, who makes more than $237,000 a year, is a big part of the reason we are in this mess in the first place. For $237,000 a year, I expect a lot more. For that kind of money he should have crafted a way to avoid this whole mess in the first place. I don't mind paying effective leaders what they are worth, but clearly, he is not worth what we have been paying him.
For your information, he makes more than double what most other superintendents in our state make, more than Peter Coroon who runs the entire county and more than the Governor of our state. Something is very wrong with that. The JSD administration needs to be drastically cut before they ask us for any more money.
Superintendent Newbold stated last night that he has no intentions of taking a pay cut. So....I don't know what planet he is living on but it's time for a reality check. I propose he be fired or take a drastic 50 percent pay cut. That's what would happen/is happening in the real world. His 20 year reign should be over right about now.
I appreciate the school board for stepping up to serve at a very difficult time, but I don’t think they realized what they have gotten themselves into until last night. I wish them well in their most difficult endeavor and am keeping them in my prayers.
I am certain that we will have a tax increase, but my fingers are crossed that it will be much more modest than the 40 percent they originally proposed.
To be continued...August 11th.

Good for you!! I watched coverage on the news last night and hoped I would see my Krissy giving them what they deserve. Thank you for all you do to get involved. I would have come last night, but we are leaving out of town and there were many preparations. Maybe next time.
Keep up the good work Kristin. You're fighting some very important battles.
Thanks for posting an update. I'm interested and I don't even live in Utah. I just recently became a member of our HOA board so I am trying to take a stand too, just like you.
Thanks for being our voice last night. We really appreciate your willingness to stand up and speak for your family and neighbors. Lets hope the school board got the message.
$237,000?! that makes me sick. way to go speak up for yourself, and everyone else. you are inspiring. good luck the 11th!
You were so courageous last night. Thanks to you and so many others, I think the outcome will be much better. What a daughter!
thank you so much for going and representing the 'hood. i have been saying that newbold should get a 50% pay cut since he is only over 50% of the old jsd. when i was pta president, i couldnt say anything, but now im not.
the jsd needs to pull their heads out.
off topic...
i also want to say that i DID NOT vote for freeman to be on the school board and anyone who did should be ashamed. he is a self serving jerk and i hope we all look at who we are voting for when it comes up again.
Thank you for your comment BA.
I'm not sure if I feel as stongly as you about Carmen Freeman especially since I have never had any personal interactions with him, but you do make a good point.
Steve and I both feel that that White Mormon Males hold way too many positons of authority around here.
We'd like to see everyone choose people who qualify for the job with the right professional credentials instead of just the right religious credentials. We all need to use our brains a little more when choosing our representatives.
Food for thought. Thanks again BA, I've wanted to say that for a long time.
I'm so glad you were standing up for all us "little people". I hate watching more and more of our money being taken away and I feel so powerless. I'm really hoping its less of an increase. I think its weird that my house dropped $90 on appraised value but my tax bump was "only" about 200. I wonder why the difference, I have heard of homes being a lot higher.
Wow, good for you Kristen!! I hope it all work out for you.
Thanks for being so involved. Are you interested in running against Mayor Crane? You'd get my vote for sure...and that's all you would need, right?
Read your comments out loud to Jonathan and he gave a big "AMEN" to your sediments. Wish we could have been there, but thanks for representing us well.
I think it was worth the while of those who attended the meeting.
Good for you. Take a stand. (You knew it was coming!)
