Christmas time is in full swing. I know it’s Christmas because of the constant Christmas music coming out of my radio courtesy FM100 and because I have a quarter of my garage filled with boxes of donated clothing.
Operation Undies 2011 has taken a sharp upswing compared to last year in the amount of loot collected for some hardworking yet needy people at the Centro de la Familia Migrant Headstart Program in Logan Utah.
These families are mostly migrant farm workers who help produce the Romaine lettuce you all enjoy at your dinner table and on your sandwiches. They bring milk to the trucks that brings milk to the store where you buy it and pour it in cups for your kids. They also dug the potatoes you just used to make that delicious Baked Potato Soup.
Many of these folks are new to Utah this year, and have never experienced cold weather before. Many of them, including children, don’t have coats and warm clothing. Imagine their surprise finding themselves in the Cache Valley in December. Brr!
Despite the large amount of goods currently piled where my 2001 Saturn usually sits at night, there is more that can be done. I won’t feel satisfied until every resource has been exhausted. I’ll know there’s more I can do until I walk through the grocery store and see my friends and neighbors hiding when they see me, diving behind the banana stand (there’s always money in the Banana Stand) for fear I will hit them up again.
They need your help for simple things. Food, socks, underwear, Wal-Mart gift cards, clothing, pajamas, bedding, an air mattress or toiletries. It doesn’t have to be a big donation to provide some big relief.
It’s time to celebrate the birth of Christ, who lived and died to teach us how to love and serve one another. So, if you haven’t already found a way to love your neighbor as yourself, please feel free to pitch-in and help.
Just 5 DAYS UNTIL THE DELIVERY IS MADE. If you want to help, bring me stuff. Bring anything. I promise it will get used. If you’re buying something for yourself or your kids, just buy two and bring me one. I know you’re buying stuff right now. I was at Wal-Mart at 10 O’clock on Thanksgiving, I saw you there. Money is fine too if you don’t care to shop. I promise it will go to good use. 100 percent of the money will be donated to a hungry belly or a cold body, Scouts honor (I am not a Scout, but I abide by their oath).
In 5 days, your easy chance to donate to a worthwhile charity will be gone. I’ve promised Steve in 5 days we will have our life back and our Saturn will have it’s parking spot back.
Don’t delay, operators are standing by.
P.S.
No one has anything to feel guilty about because this year has already been a huge success, but… Last year my facebook friends brought me 140 packs of socks and underwear in three days’ time. This year, I have only gotten about 30 packs from facebook friends. If you’re waiting until the last minute…THIS IS IT! Just saying.
